I heard silence speaking to me
to be silent
to question my soul
to hear the voice of God.
It is late after midnight
I’ve been sitting alone
leaning against the wooden pillars
in my poomugam* in utter silence.
In silence His voice I heard
of love and mercy
correction and comforts
Peace filled my soul.

*A poomugam is a special type of front porch common to many very old houses in the South Indian village where I grew up.

This reminds me of a verse from one of the Psalms we read today during the Hours of Prayer:
“Truly my soul silently waits for God; from Him comes my salvation” (Psalm 62:1).
